It’s impossible to pinpoint what makes a “hot” body, especially considering our notions of what is “hot” are ever evolving. But huge boobs have had a long and lengthy reign as the prevailing sexy norm, and breast augmentation in America is still extremely popular. And when enough people start upping the size of their cups, eventually some will experience unexpected mishaps.

Breast implant ruptures are incredibly rare — we’re talking less than 1 percent per year, according to Daniel Y. Maman, M.D. — but they do happen. And they also come with some truly wild stories.

Mia Khalifa

It’s well-known that Mia Khalifa is a die-hard hockey fan — the 2018 video of her crying with joy as she meets Alex Ovechkin recently resurfaced, following his history-making goal record — but she actually credits a rogue hockey puck with saving her life.

In 2018, Khalifa posted an Instagram photo clutching her left boob. “I got hit in the boob with a puck during the [Washington Capitals] game, and I’m 80% sure it ruptured an implant,” she wrote. “But the good news is, I got a game-used puck from Capitals Stanley Cup play-off game. Worth it.”

She later told The Daily Star, “I grabbed my chest and didn’t want to let go, because I felt like if I did let go, blood was going to be everywhere.”

Khalifa had reconstructive surgery, and all ended well, which means her adorable dog still has its beloved titty shelf.

Chyna

The late Chyna — aka Joanie Laurer — popped her breast implant during a wrestling match. “Wrestling with implants is not so easy,” she laughed in an episode of Botched. “The chain wrapped around somebody’s fist went straight across the new boobies, and pop!” Laurer writes more about the incident in her hilarious autobiography, If They Only Knew. In the days after the contact, she explains, “I swear my left tit was as flat as a glass of day-old beer.”

The in-ring pop led her on a quest to find implants that fit her muscular frame. Her initial teardrop implants “looked like I was wearing a couple of gourds on my chest because they sat on top of all that muscle,” so she had to have implants custom-made. They called them the “Chyna 2000s.”

Shauvon Torres

Reality TV stars have done some pretty wild and dangerous shit on-screen for a paycheck. One of the most viral examples? When Shauvon Torres competed in MTV’s The Challenge, braving a rope swing and plunging into the ocean way, way below. “Fuck,” she screamed as she hit the water. “Fuck! I need an X-ray on my boob. I’m not kidding, it’s fucking burning. I think I might have popped my implant.”

The other contestants seemingly found her potentially life-threatening injury pretty hilarious, and host T.J. Lavin quipped: “Sorry about your titties.” What’s even wilder is that this happened again to a different contestant, Olivia Kaiser, although this time the rupture wasn’t televised. “I broke three ribs and popped my implant, or ripped it, ruptured it, so now I have to get my boobs redone,” she told Entertainment Weekly. “I was in so much pain.”

Denise Richards

In another cautionary tale of “celebrities doing dangerous shit on reality TV,” Denise Richards popped her implants while jumping off a bridge as part of the military-inspired Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test. “I ruptured my implants off of that thing,” she later told radio host Jeff Lewis.

It’s pretty wild that a gig that includes throwing yourself out of helicopters doesn’t come with health insurance, but Richards added, “I still have to get them redone. I was supposed to a month ago, but couldn’t because we were filming, so I still have to get them redone. I think we pretty much signed our life away doing that show, it’s dangerous.”

Take note: Breast implants and extreme sports do not mesh well.

Cynthia Hedgecock

It’s rare, but even a pesky sidewalk fall can potentially pop an implant. In 2015, Cynthia Hedgecock — married to Roger Hedgecock, former mayor of San Diego — sued the city for a nasty fall that she said ruptured her breast implant, causing chest pain and breast deformities.

In court, Hedgecock said she had been carrying important papers and her phone. She held onto these while she fell, causing “heavy impact to [her] chest.” Hedgecock’s legal team even played an animation of her tit popping during the hearing. Hedgecock won her lawsuit, receiving $85,000 for medical bills, as well as “physical pain and mental suffering.”
