Earlier this week, Away-Satisfaction660 took to the Am I the Asshole subreddit to get a ruling on his behavior at what turned out to be a particularly Christian wedding. Attending the “I do’s” for a happy couple he had met “a few times” and “seemed fine” alongside his bridesmaid roommate, he decided to go green with his celebration, bringing along some edibles.

AITA for taking a THC gummy at a Christian wedding?

“I brought a pack of 5mg gummies that I would take during the reception & my roomie knew I was bringing them,” he recalled. When his roomie went to take photos with the bridal party after the ceremony, Away-Satisfaction660 decided to pop one of the gummies, asking if a couple sitting at his table would like to partake. “They politely declined,” he said, noting that he — very incorrectly — thought their refusal “was the end of that.”

After the wedding party returned from their photo-op, the couple in question beelined toward a bridesmaid, engaging in a “hushed conversation.” Though Away-Satisfaction660 said he couldn’t quite make out what they said “over the music,” the gravity of their discussion was quickly evident. “The couple’s vibe changed & while we were talking as a table they would start responding to things I was saying with ‘Oh, I wonder what other fun things you’re taking’ & ‘Don’t let the kids here see you doing that’ in snarky-ish tones,” he explained.

After growing “uncomfortable” and stepping outside for some air, he was greeted by his roommate who provided him with an update from the head table. “She informed me that the table started talking about me when I left, and the couple was appalled to find out I brought gummies to the reception,” he wrote. “They expressed their distaste for drugs that aren’t ‘FDA approved’ & are also apparently christian, which became clear when they stated that ‘this was a Christian wedding & [I] should be more respectful in not bringing ‘addictive drugs’ around a celebration with kids present.’”

“I was embarrassed & didn’t realize I would cause such a reaction, as they had an open bar & plenty of the people were already buzzed, that couple included,” he continued.

When he returned back inside, he attempted to apologize, noting that cannabis was, in fact, legal in their state, and largely non-addictive, unlike alcohol. The couple, however, wasn’t having it. “The man seemed to think that was a jab at him, as he was already pretty drunk,” Away-Satisfaction660 relayed. “He interrupted me & said ‘you don’t get to tell others how much they can drink at a wedding, especially when you’re a plus 1 & we were actually invited.’”

Upon hearing others discussing the drama, Away-Satisfaction660 decided it was best to make an early exit. “At that point I felt unwelcome and told my roomie I was just going to wait in the car outside,” he explained. “She opposed that, but I told her I’d be fine and left. I stayed in the car for three hours. When my roomie finally came she told me that when the bride heard about this, she didn’t personally care, but said I absolutely shouldn’t have brought edibles, as many of the attendees were christians and equated weed to meth or cocaine.”

Much like the wedding guests’ views on cannabis, the commenters were divided on whether Away-Satisfaction660 was indeed the asshole here.

“I'm gonna say ESH,” wrote BaltimoreProud. “They need to chill out especially if you aren’t making a scene, but you shouldn’t offer random people you don’t know THC at a wedding.”

“ESH,” added cheesyMTB. “It’s ok you took 5mg thc. No worse than being drunk or buzzed. But you failed to gauge your audience and randomly offering other people gummies. Should have kept it to yourself. There’s still quite a social stigma. And a wedding is not the place to try to tear down those barriers if you’re not the bride or groom.”

In fairness, Away-Satisfaction660 took these criticisms in stride. “Thanks for the feedback, overall lesson learned lol,” he concluded. “I’m not going to sweat it though since they were pretty catty and I’ll never see any of them again” — especially, it would seem, at the dispensary.
