Maternity photo shoots aren’t a new thing — Beyoncé, for example, famously broke the internet when she announced her second pregnancy with a series of unforgettable photos back in 2017. But a Redditor has perhaps created a new subgenre of maternity shoot: one inspired by dead presidents.
Posting to r/WitchesVsPatriarchy, retlaw_yensid posted a photo of herself side-by-side with the 27th President of the United States, William Howard Taft. In her portrait, she is standing, straight-backed and leaning on a bassinet, mimicking Taft’s posture in his portrait. Her portrait has an added bonus though: her pet corgi is also in frame.
8 months pregnant and feeling about as feminine as William Taft…I present my one maternity photo.

Underneath the photos, retlaw_yensid wrote, “Fellow witches, I’ve been feeling like a sweaty walrus for a while now, so I wanted to take a pic that more closely captured that feeling. As my silhouette becomes more William Taft-esque, I thought of a fun little project.
“I was advised to take a ‘girly’ photo, one with my hair and makeup done, a flowy dress, the works… but that doesn’t feel true for me in this moment of my life. My experience with pregnancy has been rough, stinky, unattractive and definitely not glam or sexy. I set up the camera and decided to just wear what I was already wearing, not to brush my hair or to do my makeup, so as to capture the authenticity of how I look each day in pregnancy. This picture, while a little tongue-in-cheek, feels right to me :)”
Naturally, the comments were overwhelmingly supportive of her inventive take on a maternity portrait, with one commenter assuring her, “Listen, I know you feel like a sweaty mess and unfeminine, but I am here to tell you that you look stunning in this picture. STUNNING. The power pose is absolutely working for you.” Another wrote, “Taft never looked that good pregnant!”
Indeed he did not.
As an added bonus, retlaw_yensid also shared a version of her portrait with Taft’s moustache photoshopped onto her face, fully completing her transformation into a largely forgettable president who, it must be said, did at least have an iconic stache.
