An Instagram influencer known as Arii posted a photo the other day where she lamented the troubles of selling t-shirts to her fans. She had recently started her own brand, as everyone does once they reach more than 10k followers (it's the rule) and was upset with the lack of enthusiasm from her "fans".
Here is her full post:
We would be lying if we said this didn't bring us joy. While we can feel for people working hard to create their own products and business we also can have a laugh when things don't go the right way.
We can only hope that this is a sign of the coming tide and that soon influencers will be banished to a world of their own where free swag and vip tickets to concerts fall from the sky and their egos are kept intact. We can only hope!
Reactions From Twitter:
The influencer bubble is bursting. This young lady has well over 2 million followers and couldn’t sell 36 shirts. Focus on genuine engagement and not followers cuz they ain’t gonna buy a thing. pic.twitter.com/uOSVxc2k4D

i’m not asking for sympathy. i’m just sharing my story, i’ve always kept it real with my followers & i wasn’t gonna lie about this.

constructive criticism: nothing about ur brand is new or innovating, we’ve seen it before. if u want to sell, sell something original and creative. good luck ari!! :)

Just gonna be honest, your merch was super basic and didn't even look great. You're living in an Influencer bubble. No follower really gives a fuck about you, they just follow you cause you look pretty but that's about it. Try to be genuine. Atb.

Influencers can build successful brands + product lines on their own.

Logan Paul used to do $10 million in yearly merch revenue. He understood his audience & how to develop + market product to them.
That's where Arii failed. The idea was right, but the execution was way off. pic.twitter.com/yTZKMITgA1
