This woman posted a thread on Twitter, detailing her desire to make a big pot of chili for her new next-door neighbors; a group of college-age young men. After multiple delivery drivers confused her house for theirs, this woman took note of the pizza boxes overflowing their garbage and decided they were in need of a nice home-cooked meal. Sounds good right? Well not everyone thought so.
several guys moved in next door, students I guess. and I've gotten two confused doordash drivers for them in the last week, and their trash can was completely overflowing with pizza boxes. i don't think they cook. i am feeling such a strange motherly urge to feed these boys

They're incredibly quiet which is a real surprise. I dunno if they're renting or what but I would like them to stick around. Maybe I will make a big pot of chili this weekend when it gets cooler.

Citing a maternal instinct as part of her desire to feed the guys, many Twitter users remarked that the men were more than old enough to feed themselves. Others felt that her efforts were misplaced, as the guys obviously had the means to buy food.
Don't feed them, they need to learn. If you really want to cook for someone u could do it to homeless people.

Many people saw nothing wrong with the idea however, noting that gifting food has been a tradition of greeting new neighbors for a long time, and criticized the others for their negative opinions.
It's a completely normal thing to share food w community &is common practice all over the world. It's actually proper etiquette &traditional to bring food to welcome new neighbors & introduce yourself. Also there's such a thing as, y'know, being friendly...

Looool this was me in college with the group of boys that lived across from me. I could tell none of them cooked and at the time I was still figuring out how much food to cook for 1-2 people so I started bringing them over meals. One of their moms came to visit and thanked me

It is amazing that such a simple post has the ability to generate such strong and polarizing opinions, but that is the nature of modern internet and society. I’m sure the boys would love a nice big pot of warm chili. Do they deserve it? Who knows, but who are we to gatekeep acts of kindness?
