The first American arts and crafts furniture movement started in the late 19th century and featured designers such as Gustav Stickley and Charles Rohlfs. 

The key principles of this movement were to use locally sourced materials and to create pieces by hand rather than mass manufacture them. Then a few hundred years passed. A lot happened in America during that time.
