Omne vivum ex ovo: “All life comes from an egg.”

Before chickens, there were eggs. And long after chickens are gone, eggs shall remain. The word egg is found in the many cosmogonies of the ancient world, where an egg upon hatching gives rise to the universe.

Here is a basket case of eggs, beginning with the Spanish festival Els Enfarinats (Images 1-6), a 200-year-old tradition where on December 28th, townsmen of Ibi, Spain stage a mock coup d'état donned in traditional military garb armed with flour and eggs as their weapons. Els Enfarinats roughly translates to “the breaded ones.” A flurry of eggs, flour bombs, and fireworks fills the streets in celebration of the Day of the Innocents.
