Kamila Valieva absolutely crushed it on behalf of the Russian Olympic Committee team by becoming the first woman in Olympics history to successfully land a quad jump. The 15-year-old Russian prodigy has been wowing audiences around the world for many years now, but pulling off a successful quad jump is an Olympics first.
Interestingly, Valieva's gold medal will be added to the Russian Olympic Committee's tally, not Russia's. Due to a doping scandal, the actual country of Russia has been barred from participation in Olympic events but Russian athletes are still allowed to compete under a neutral flag. This was also the case during the 2021 Tokyo Olympics. Thus, the Russian contingent at this year's Winter Olympics came out without the traditional playing of the national anthem, and are not allowed to fly the Russian flag. Winners at the podium will also hear Pyotr Tchaikovsky's 'Piano Concerto No. 1' instead of the Russian anthem.
