Here’s What an Illegal Rave Looked Like in 1989

Back before “going to a rave” meant “filming the DJ with your phone.”


When the rave scene emerged in the late ‘80s, it looked very little like it does now. While most raves today are thrown in relatively put-together spaces with working bathrooms, back in the day, you’d basically have a party wherever you could — usually, until the cops shut the thing down.


Although this still sometimes happens today, it’s fun to look back on the early days of raving: a time when ecstasy had only just been introduced to the scene, and DJing all night meant carrying crates’ worth of records with you to the show. Here’s a clip from one of those illegal raves, with this one taking place in 1989:
