Toronto Man Receives Cease-and-Desist After Building Tiny Homes for the Homeless
No good deed goes unpunished.
This is Ryan Donais. Everybody say, “Hi, Ryan!”
Ryan lives in Toronto, Canada, a city that is, like most major cities, experiencing a housing crisis. While things aren’t as bad in Toronto as they are in cities like Vancouver, getting a place to stay is still unreasonably expensive, with the average one-bedroom apartment costing almost $2,000 per month.
As a result of these high housing costs, Toronto — again, like many major cities — has a substantial amount of people living on the streets. Seeing this, Ryan decided to build transitional shelters for all those without homes and, without a place to put them, set them up in the city’s public parks.
For this help, Ryan promptly received a cease-and-desist from the city.
Now, Ryan says his group is seeking donations and wants to work with the city to place these transitional shelters on city land, allowing people without homes to have a warm, safe place to sleep until they can transition to proper housing.
Only time will tell if the government allows him to build houses for the unhoused, but seeing how they’ve already reacted to the current rental market, I wouldn’t get my hopes up.
